First and foremost, WOW. I had heard some interesting things about this movie but I really had no idea that I would be as impressed as I a right now about a MUSICAL/OPERA film(I hated “Chicago” just so you know).
This film is brought to us by seasoned Saw franchise director Darren Lynn Bousman, who directed Saw II, Saw III, and Saw IV. After viewing this film you will see that Darren really loves putting gore in basically every film that he helms, and I diligently solute him for that.
This film takes place in the year 2056, where much of the Earth’s population has been diminished due to mass organ failures. We are then introduced to some pretty sweet comic panels giving us a history lecture on the organ failures, and the magnificent cure that came about. This cure is a company known as GeneCo, who specialize in organ transplants roughly in the same fashion that you would receive an automobile loan. Here’s the catch, if you start to miss your payments, your organs are “repossessed” by the Repo Man, and by “repossessed” I mean they are literally ripped from your body. F*ckin sweet huh?!?!?!?!? We get to see hearts, intestines, eyes, and what I believe was a spinal column get forcibly ripped from those who decided to not make their payments and fall into delinquent status.
Now keep in mind…this is also a musical! Somehow…Darren Lynn Bousman and Terrance Zdunich(writer and also the “Graverobber” in the film) made it happen to where we can watch a musical(normally a film reserved for sissies) and still enjoy it as we would any other horror flick!
What really surprised me with this film was the music. If you are a fan of the NIN/Tool sound, then you will definitely dig this score. I believe the music is what really led me to actually liking this film, and this film made me a firm believer that the reason I have always hated musicals is because the music in those musicals always straight up sucked. There are in fact a total of 58 songs in this movie, including instrumental songs. Another huge surprise was Paris Hilton’s acting/singing role in this film. According to director Darren Lynn Bousman, he did not want to even give Paris the opportunity to audition because he knew horror fans would backlash at that idea. In the end he decided to let her audition and according to his words she dressed “perfectly for the part” and “rocked” the vocals audition(she can actually sing? What???). Yes, its true, she really did perform well(considering how sappy her performance was in her homemade pornos). We are also introduced to the unique singing voice of Alexa Vega(that chick from the Spy Kids movies) as well as the infamous Bill Mosely(Otis from The Devils Rejects and House of 1000 Corpses) who’s character was outright hilarious in this film.
If I have any real complaint whatsoever about this film it would be the fact that there really are no “scares” in this film. I really cannot blame this film for that though due to the fact that this movie was really not meant to be scary, it was meant to be beautiful, gory, and fun to watch, and they struck gold with that combo.
Overall this is definitely a movie you should check out as soon as you can, even if you hate musicals like me, I am sure you will still enjoy watching something creative come out of the horror genre for once.
