Here is a film dedicated to the many fans of the CLASSIC horror B-Movie icon Bruce “If Chins Could Kill” Campbell. This movie stars Bruce as himself, a lowly B-Movie actor who can’t get a decent script these days. After a group of screwhead kids desecrate an old Chinese cemetery, the Chinese God of War and Protect of the Dead, Guan-Di, is unleashed to wreak havoc and get revenge on all those who reside in the town where Chinese miners lost their lives. Jeff(Taylor Sharpe), who survived a Guan-Di attack, sets out to bring to town the only the only possible solution to their problem, Bruce Campbell and his “Ash kicking” abilities! Because of course…if he kicks ass in his movies…he kicks ass in real life right? HA!
For starters, this is a film obviously made for the fans of Bruce Campbell. We are given tons of puns(sorry for rhyming) going back to his previous films and roles. We even hear a crack at what its like working for Sam Raimi(leave it to Bruce to make fun of his friends in a movie). We even see lots of cameos for actors and actresses from the “Evil Dead Trilogy” as well as Ted Raimi doing what he does best…taking over as many ridiculous roles as he can possibly play. Because this movie has to do with one of the many Chinese gods, you will hear lots of Chinese jokes in this film, which are always funny(its true my Chinese friends). This film completely exploit’s the typical Bruce Campbell humor, all for us Dearing fans(thank you Bruce, how thoughtful!). We get a handful of his typical hilarious one-liners, a chainsaw reference, and a sexually innuendo’d reference to his “Boomstick”. Did I mention this movie is made to please his fans? Plus to top it off, its got some pretty hilarious gore(the severed hand scene made me laugh hysterically), and we witness at least what…a dozen severed heads? Thanks Bruce!
There is not much I didn’t like about this film. I’m sure those who are not fans of his may not understand all of the humor and may have some complaints, but this film is not made for those people. I suppose my only complaint would be that he doesn’t get his hand severed and impossibly attach a chainsaw to it to fight Guan-Di That would have been so epic!(maybe copyright issues kept that from happening?) I also was not totally into the ending of this film. It still made me laugh, and it was unexpected, but I really would have preferred and all out gorefest(ala Evil Dead) to end this flick.
If you are a fan of his, then this is a MUST see. And if you are not a fan of his or have no idea who Bruce Campbell is(shame on you)…then you should still check this flick out because this movie is funny as hell!
– I ranked this film #43 in my Top 50 Horror Movies of the Decade(41-50) post.
